How-to maximize learning biology with your own biological microscopes

How-to Maximize Learning Biology With Your Own Biological Microscopes

So you are a sophomore or a junior in high school or probably you are a Biology major in the university? And you have a few or more biology subjects requiring the use of biological microscopes. Imagine all of the self-study and experiments you can finish faster if you just had one at your disposal.

Microscope and the Layman

What are biological microscopes? A microscope is a scientific instrument used to see objects too minute for the naked eye to see without any help. It comes from the Greek word «mikros» meaning small and «skopein» meaning to look or see. The study of investigating small objects or life forms using such an instrument is called microscopy.

Biological microscopes are microscopes specifically dedicated for the study of tiny «microscopic» organisms and or parts of plants or animals like tissue samples or blood samples. These microscopes are not only used for biology classes and studies but also the science in general.

Maximizing the Benefits of Your Own Biological Microscopes

Why spend long and tiring hours doing your experiments and making your science homeworks using your school’s microscope? Well not anymore. Biological microscopes come in many shapes, sizes, forms and models. The most important things to remember when you wish to purchase such an item are two things: how much do they cost and how often will you be using it for your school work? If you have this tool readily available you can do your homework or experiments anytime, anywhere you want. However, remember these devices are not really cheap so when you do succumb to the idea of buying one, you really really must need it or you could split the costs with your classmates.

To maximize the benefits for your biological microscopes, you should make sure that your school’s courseworks, whether it be homeworks or science experiments, are plentiful and that in most of them, that you can work on. If it is not enough, you can just probably resort to renting it. But if you do have that much science school work to do, it would be prudent to have such instrument lying just around to use at your own time and volition.

These microscopes are not only used for testing or examining animal or plant tissue samples. It is also basically useful for other science experiments and tests such as examining grains of sand or rocks or soil. It can also be used to examine different kinds of seeds and cross-sections of plant leaves or stems.

All in all, there are different applications of the uses of microscopes in your courseworks at school. The whole idea behind buying or renting one is to rid the dependency to go to back to your schools or universities science labs just to use their equipment. There isn’t also enough of them to go around for all the students. So make your choice. Dependence on what the school has? Or independence and finish all your school work way before the deadline arrives?

Rate my teacher — does it affect our teaching

Rate My Teacher — Does It Affect Our Teaching?

When I first started teaching I had no idea about the website Rate My Teacher. As a new teacher at the time, I was curious to see how I was performing in the eyes of my students. I wanted to know if I was being helpful to my students in the style that I was teaching them, or if my students liked what I was doing. As a new teacher we do not always know how we are doing because we are not often told, or able to observe other teachers on a continuous basis. We are also at a point in our careers where we have not had many previous classes for comparison.

Many teachers feel the need to check out sites like Rate my Teacher because they do not often get recognition for the things they are doing right at a school. Administration and other teachers are often too busy to notice or to make a point of noticing things you do well because they are often engrossed in finishing off their ‘have to do’ list before any of the ‘nice to do’ things can happen. Rightfully so; however, in a school the ‘have to do’ list is often never ending.

I have noticed that the amount of students that take the time to comment on this site is pretty minimal from year to year for each teacher considering how many students we teach in any given semester. I believe I may have 3 students comment a year out of the 180 that I teach. This makes it hard to make a formal judgement about our teaching practice based on this site alone. It is always nice to have someone say that they loved you as a teacher on Rate my Teacher; but, when I think about it realistically, the sample size of people that comment, in comparison to our student population is so low. This makes the Rate my Teacher site a relatively inaccurate judgment of our practice.

It is also ineffective to generalize these comments to assume that we are getting through to all of our students, based on a response from a couple individuals. After all, when many students do not hand in assignments, are they likely to contribute their input to a Rate my Teacher Site? Some students may also say they loved your class because It was easy, or say they hated you because you punished them for not following classroom rules. Some students use Rate my Teacher to vent about a teacher that they did not like simply to get back at them for something that may have happened in class. This is unfair because others students, teachers or parents view these comments and may form false judgements about a particular teacher based upon a sample population that is too small to have validity. Taking this idea to a medical example, we would never trust a medication that was only tested on 3 of 180 people who needed it.

If we are looking to improve our teaching practice, and searching for more relevant ideas on how to do that, instead of referring to Rate My Teacher, and feeling either confident or discouraged from the comments on this site; it would be more effective to hand out a survey in each of our classes, containing questions specifically about the courses we are teaching, asking students about what they enjoyed, what they disliked, if they felt that lessons were delivered with clarity or anything else that you feel relevant to help your practice next term. Rather than consulting Rate my Teacher, and being tempted to gossip about other teachers and comments made about them, it is better to spend our time by effective in our own practice and getting students to rate our classes each term, so we have an idea about where improvements can be made.

Do not forget to check out the link in the resource box below. I’ve got a great free report that details my experiences so you can learn from them.

The finishing touch: how to tile around your bathtub

The Finishing Touch: How to Tile Around Your Bathtub

Tiling around your bathtub is a fairly straightforward procedure that most homeowners can pull off with just a little learning and patience. Tiles are a good choice for the bathroom, as they are easy to keep clean in what is essentially a very damp atmosphere. Tiles for around a bath may be ceramic, glass or stone. The choice is up to you and depends on things such as the look you are going for and what fits with the d?cor of the rest of the room.

Getting Started

To get started, you’ll need to make sure you lay all the tiles out very precisely. This is an important step because this is a labor-intensive job when it comes to measuring and cutting. You might also want to consider using mastic instead of thinset for this job. Mastic is much stickier than thinset and will prevent the tiles from slipping down the wall or otherwise out of place.

You will then need to measure the height of each wall that is located above the tub. By dividing this number in half, you can find the halfway point on the wall. Then, measure how many tiles above and below this line will fit. If you end up with less than half a tile at the top and bottom, adjust the center mark to give yourself more space to work with. A small sliver will look odd and may not cut straight or stay stuck.

Laying the Tile

Once you have your tile layout all planned out, start tiling at the center mark and work outwards. Mastic will last about twenty minutes once it is laid on, so don’t lay too much at once. Don’t forget to make the deep ridges with the trowel to help the mastic spread out and adhere to the tiles correctly. In addition, you should use tile spacers to ensure the tiles are laid evenly and that there aren’t any vast expanses of grout. You will also need to leave space between the bottom row and the tub for caulk.

Some tiles will need to be cut to fit edges, or around faucets. Remember the rule: measure twice, cut once. Having a few extra tiles that you need is also useful in case of breakages.

Finishing the Job

Grouting is the last thing you will have to do in order to fill in the gaps between the tiles and hold them fast. Push the grout gently into the gaps and wipe off any excess grout with a damp sponge. A final buff can be done the following day after it has all had a good chance to dry.

If you are not feeling too confident about embarking upon the project on your own, taking a course in tiling may be just what you need, as a course will teach you all the skills you need to make your home improvements look professional.

My thoughts on student counselling

My Thoughts On Student Counselling

Student’s current personality profile: It is of utmost importance to know what the student’s current personality profile is, before the counsellor starts the counselling process, be it a Career oriented counselling, or a Personality development counselling or Counselling to achieve Success in Life which is my Online counselling objective is.

Every student is a different personality. The student’s current personality is a combined result of following:

1) The Parents: Parents are the first Gurus of any child. Their behaviour, their attitude, their Personality, their way of handling different situations have a deep impact on the child. The child start imitating the parents especially the female child imitates mother and male child imitates father. The parents has a major role to play in the overall «Personality development» process of the child.

2) The environment: The environment in which the child is brought up plays a major role in polishing the student. The environment consists of :

a. The residing place neighbourhood of the student.

b. The school in which the student spends most of his time in childhood and the teaching faculty the child interacts in the school.

c. The other places where the student often goes eg. The coaching classes for his extracurricular and co curricular activities.

d. Family functions, week end get-togethers and parties, etc in which he interacts with his relatives, etc.

3) Some strong incidences: Every student’s personality gets moulded by each strong incidence the student and /or family undergo. Such incidence has a major impact on the child’s spiritual thinking and the child starts taking strong positions as a result of his/her experiences of the world during such strong incidences.

4) The media: Nowadays media to which the child is exposed to has achieved the prime importance in the overall development of the child. The movies the child watch ,the programmes the child watch especially on Television / videos or listen on radios produces a very deep impact on the child’s mind. This impact unknowingly starts impacting the process of child’s «personality development» without knowledge and also without much control of parents / teachers. 5) The Internet: I specifically did not mention the reading material in the media discussion above because nowadays the reading habits of students has been taken over by their browsing habits. The in-depth reading is slowly disappearing and more and more students are now spending their valuable time on internet browsing for what their current requirement is. Very few % of students read the downloaded content and try to understand it thoroughly.

(I will be using a male student personality to explain my thoughts further, but they are equally applicable to female students also)

Now there is an old saying «The lizard run is up to the fence only», meaning one can progress only within his boundaries. It is very difficult for an ordinarily person to think beyond his personality boundaries. These boundaries within which an individual’s Personality development takes place right from the childhood are obviously a result of the combination of above mentioned factors. Hence if the student wants to improve his life style and go beyond the boundaries, there have to be conscious efforts on his part to change above factors towards betterment. The student cannot change his Parents and the environment around him in which he spends most of his time. Also he can’t escape the impacts resulting from some strong incidences in his life. During initial period when he is not yet started taking his own decisions even the choice of media programmes and internet browsing etc is not meticulously selected by him. Due to all this his Personality Development starts taking place without him being aware of the impacts of such non directional Personality Development. The student slowly starts getting converted into a Man and normally process of adolescence usually coincides when he enters Higher Secondary schooling i.e. 8th std or equivalent and during which his average age is 13/ 14 yrs. During this period he starts taking his own decisions or rather he starts taking positions in life. Hence my site http://www.yesiwill , which is a motivational / online counselling site, is designed keeping in mind this age and hence it is suitable for students from 8th std onwards up to Post graduation level. The counselling’s theme is to achieve Success in life irrespective of career chosen by him. And the counselling suggestions are aimed at his overall «Personality Development», which he need to follow with full understanding so that there is a sustainable positive shift in him to make him a successful professional in whatever career chosen by him. The aim is that the student should shine and develop a winning habit in him.

Understanding the importance of fire safety training

Understanding the Importance of Fire Safety Training

Every person in UK knows that fire is something that Her Majesty’s government takes seriously. That is why a part of their laws require every employer and or/ owner of a commercial building to have at least one of their staff undergo fire safety training and have that trained personnel facilitate further dissemination of information. Now if you are wondering this training is important, here are some reasons why:

  1. In fire safety training you will learn a lot of things that you ought to know about blazes in general. You will be able to identify their sources, the things that can make the sources ignite, the contributing factors that allow the littlest ignition to thrive and their types. Knowing all these makes it possible for you to understand and grasp the behavior of fire. This is important because when you understand fire, you get to have a bigger chance of preventing it.
  2. If you are a building administrator or an employer, you can use the knowledge that you will get from the training to make your building/ office a safer place. You will know what type of signs will your office be needing, what kind of extinguishers should be buying and how many fire exits should you be providing your tenants/ employees.
  3. The training will also teach you skills that you may need to keep yourself safe from blazes. These skills will most probably include operating a fire extinguisher (or a fire blanket if that is what you have in your workplace), reading/ interpreting fire safety signs and if you happen to be a marshall, effectively leading everybody to safety or even performing CPR if needed.
  4. Apart from the knowledge that your tenants/ employees will get, the fire safety training will also give them awareness. See this is very important because most of the time, people just shrug about blazes because they fail to realize how serious it can really be. So in knowing how fires are and how devastating can they really get will help everybody take it seriously, enough for them to be willing to do everything just to prevent them from happening.

Those are a few of the things that you are bound to get from fire training. If you are going to sum everything up, you will notice that more than giving out important knowledge about blazes, this training promotes health and safety at work or at home. So you see, even if they cost you some money, the training will definitely be worth it. Besides, what is a small amount compared to the safety of your entire building or your people?

Now if all these got you interested, you can find out more details (where to get training, who to contact and what specific program to participate in), you can contact the designated fire marshall in your area for any recommendations or advice. Or, if you prefer to do the searching on your own, you can always log in to the Internet to find out which center is nearest your building location and which one gives the best training.
